Celebrating Women and Small Businesses with the Women’s Development Center at GCU Lahore

On March 16, 2023, Storyteller’s Saga partnered with the Women’s Development Center at Government College University, Lahore, for content and event coverage of the GCU Women’s Festival 2023. The event brought together female entrepreneurs and artisans to showcase their products and services.

As official content partners, we shone a spotlight on the talented women all around while underscoring the importance of such an event.

Offering event coverage is just one of the ways we move closer to our overarching goals: to support small businesses and build a flourishing community of women supporting women.

Festival Success

The festival was a huge success with around 40-45 stalls and a footfall of 1500-2000 people. The stalls featured various products, from food and jewelry to paintings, books, and accessories. The festival was a testament to the power of women coming together to support each other.

This recognition deeply moved the founder of Floral and Fragrant, a participating business.

“This was my first opportunity to introduce my small business in person. And the appreciation I got was overwhelming! This was the first time I felt all those sleepless nights and the tough grind were worth it. I experienced the satisfaction of my hard work paying off.”

Importance of Small Businesses

The Women’s Development Center emphasizes that small businesses are crucial for sustainable economic growth. Events like GCU Women’s Festival 2023 promote local businesses and create a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs.

Typically, women face cultural and social barriers when entering the workforce in Pakistan. However, platforms that elevate women’s craft and creativity normalize the idea of women owning their work. Women operating small businesses can thus claim greater agency and financial independence.

Supporting women-led businesses is vital for sustainable economic growth and gender equality. Down the line, it can create a more inclusive and diverse economy that benefits everyone. And the GCU Women’s Festival 2023 was an excellent opportunity to showcase and support these businesses while inspiring other women.

Opportunities to Network and Socialize

Afterward, as the buying and selling winded down, the evening became a calming lull with the social night named “Shaam-e-Adab.” The social acted as a final opportunity for participants, performers, and other talents to unite and celebrate the spirit of womanhood, entrepreneurship, and creativity.

Meanwhile, the entertainment lineup featured performers reciting selections of poetry and ghazals, accompanied by a mix of classical music.

As content partners, we feel privileged to be able to amplify a platform where women can connect with customers, build their networks, and gain exposure. Contributors to the event’s resounding success included the festival’s official event planner, The CSH Cynosure, and Nestle Purelife and Nescafe sponsors.

The Women’s Development Center at GCU Lahore has cultivated an inspirational community. The organization brought together women entrepreneurs across Lahore and provided a platform to showcase their businesses and products. Platforms like GCU Lahore also play an influential role in encouraging similar events across Pakistani organizations while inspiring more women to pursue their dreams.
